How to Make ChatGPT Stop Making Things Up

Hey there!

We’ve all seen ChatGPT confidently invent facts out of thin air. It’s called hallucination, and it’s one of the biggest reasons AI-generated content can’t always be trusted.

AI hallucinations look exactly like this.

But here’s the good news: You can dramatically cut down on hallucinations by adding a simple verification layer to your prompts.

LET’S. DIVE. IN. 🤿

The Anti-Hallucination Prompt

This prompt forces AI to verify information across multiple sources, flag unsupported claims, and highlight both consensus and discrepancies. Here’s how it works:

Use [three] or more different internet sources. If there are fewer than [three] sources, output the message: 'Not enough sources found for verification.'

Afterward, check if any information you’ve mentioned is cited by [two] or more sources. If there are fewer than [two] sources, output the message: 'Not enough sources found to verify an information,' supplemented by the mention of the affected information.

Subsequently, in a separate section, list [all] sources of your information and display the information used. Provide a link to each respective source.

Compare the statements from these sources for commonalities. In another separate section, highlight the commonalities of information from the sources as well as deviations, using different colors.

Why It Works

  • Forces Multi-Source Verification: The AI must rely on multiple credible sources instead of a single, potentially biased one.

  • Flags Unsupported Claims: If no sources back a claim, it will be flagged as weak or unverified.

  • Improves Transparency: Every piece of information is paired with a source, making it easy to fact-check.

  • Highlights Consensus and Discrepancies: You see both what’s widely agreed upon and what’s debatable.

Pro Tip

Add this as a "pre-prompt" layer before any major request — especially for research, data analysis, or critical content. It’s like having a built-in fact-checker working in real time.

If you’ve been burned by AI making stuff up, this might be the fix you’ve been looking for.
